What is Sclerotherapy? Sclerotherapy treats a broad range of vessels from tiny spider veins to deep blue reticular veins quickly, safely, effectively, and with very little discomfort. Patients with dark, light or tanned skin can experience outstanding results without bruising or blistering.
How does Sclerotherapy work? A solution is injected through a tiny needle to damage the inner walls of the vein. Once the walls are damaged the vein closes shut and is no longer visible.
What types of veins can be treated? Sclerotherapy can remove unsightly veins from all parts of the body. Small, facial veins can be treated quickly without bruising or complication. Spider vein treatment and moderate size blue leg veins can also be treated with excellent results. Knotty or large varicose veins are not good candidates. A careful evaluation with Dr. Elliott will help you determine which vessels can be treated and the best course of treatment.
How many Sclerotherapy treatments do I need? Often, patients find that one or two treatments are sufficient if they have only a few vessels but someone with a lot of spider veins on both legs usually requires at least three spider vein treatments to see great results.
Do the Sclerotherapy treatments hurt? Dr. Elliott uses a solution that is not painful and no anesthetic is needed. Like the laser vein therapy, the discomfort is very minimal and there is usually no discomfort after the procedure.
What happens after the Sclerotherapy treatment? Strenuous activity is discouraged for the first 24 hours after treatment and support hose is recommended but not necessary afterwards. Side effects can include a brownish discoloration at the site of the vein treatment that may persist for weeks to months, especially with larger veins. Like the laser vein therapy, sclerotherapy is not used for large, knotty varicose veins.
When will I see results? Most patients find that the majority of the treated veins have shown significant improvement within two to six weeks of treatment. However, your final results may not be apparent for several months. Over time, it is possible for new veins to appear but these too can be removed with Sclerotherapy or the Vantage laser system.
